Directions

If you should get separated from the caravan or arrive at a different time, these directions may be helpful. We will probably not be able to meet everyone in town or at the gate. My cell number is (979)324-5115, but I don’t know how reliable it will be way out there. The drive from College Station is just about 10 hours, including stops for gas and a meal. It is about 9 to Van Horn, and another hour to the ranch house at Indio where we will be camping. The road from Van Horn to Indio is entirely dirt and rock, and it gets hilly toward the end. I did it just fine in 2WD, buit if you have never done off road driving it might be nerve racking. This type of road can eat tires, so everyone be sure to have a spare!

The directions from Van Horn are as follows:

  • Exit 140B from I-10 and take business I-10 into town
  • Look for Chuy’s Restaurant, which will be to the North. Directly across from Chuy’s is an unnamed road which goes under I-10 and heads south, take this road
  • About a block beyond I-10 the road becomes dirt; follow this road for about 20 miles, during the course of which you will cross a railroad track and the Green River (which will be brown, as it is dry); you will start to see signs for Indio around 10 miles
  • you will reach the gate, if it is open drive through, if not wait until someone shows up; from the gate you pretty much follow the main road until you reach the ranch house (~4 miles)- stay to the right, don’t make any left turns; at this point the road is the roughest, but as long as you go slow and are careful you shouldn’t have a problem
